It’s faithful, it’s stupendously well shot and so well acted while also being sweet and elegant. It needed a bit less dialogue and a bit more of the cinematic action or situations, but still the dialogue works.Īctually, the balcony scene is phenomenal. My main problem with it is its lack of originality as it is overly faithful, maybe to a fault. However, watching it on its own terms, it’s rather solid actually. It’s solid, but that movie is pretty great so it fares poorly in comparison. It’s never as good as the fellow Oscar nominee from 1968 which is the ultimate adaptation of this famous play. It’s actually a pretty solid adaptation in its own right.įirst and foremost, let’s get this one first out of the way. Romeo and Juliet is a 1936 romantic melodrama film directed by George Cukor and starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer.
